Earth Day Festival

Get excited for Earth Day Festival 2023! With over 10 family-friendly activity stations and 3 sustainable swaps, there's something to do for everyone in the neighborhood.

Stamp Card Activity Stations

  • Earth Day Mosaic, Urban Glass 
    Create a community mosaic with UrbanGlass! The finished planter will be put on display in Fort Greene Park following Earth Day!

  • Origami Frog Racing, Urban Park Rangers
    Learn how to create frogs out of origami with the Urban Park Rangers, and race them over obstacles to the finish line! All ages are encouraged.

  • Wildflower Papermaking, Walt Whitman Library
    Make wildflower paper with Brooklyn Public Library! You can plant your paper and watch it grow. For folks of all ages.

  • Story Time, Walt Whitman Library
    Sing, play, and read books about the Earth with librarians from Brooklyn Public Library! Have fun hearing great picture books read aloud and playing with other children during this program dedicated to young children. For children of all ages and their caregivers. Feel free to bring yoga mats or seat cushions for seating!

  • Playing Recycled Mugs, Brooklyn Music School
    Join us as we build a percussion instrument using upcycled materials! Have you ever wanted to play a concert on mugs? Learn about Scale and musical notes through this fun and interactive percussion activity station!

  • Seed Starting, Fort Greene Park Conservancy
    Lettuce, thyme, and basil, oh my! Learn how to mix your own potting soil and start seeds that you can take home and watch grow!

  • Earth Day Vision Board, Fort Greene Park Conservancy
    Do you have a vision for the earth? Engage your creative side and create a collective vision board with us! Bring recycled magazines, newspapers, and paper for collaging! 

  • Leavings Project, Nelson Santos
    While exploring Fort Greene Park during Earth Day festivities, don’t forget to look up! Perhaps you’ll spy beautiful, twinkling leaves hiding in the trees. Art by Nelson Santos.

  • Recycle Toss, Green Team
    How much do you Recycle?
    Participants will toss bottles into the correct recycling bin before time runs out.

  • Earth Day Trivia, Green Team
    Learn about our Earth. A great way for the public to learn about the planet we live on. Choose a question from the whiteboard and correct answers will get you one step closer to winning your Earth Day prize!

  • Seed Bombs, Green Team
    Join us as we rewild the city! Participants will be given seeds to wrap in a small amount of clay to make a clay ball, called a “seed bomb’. They can either take their bombs home or throw them in tree pits and empty lots across the city!

  • Bottle Bowling, Green Team
    Join us as we say no to single-use plastics!
    Participants will bowl a small ball at an arrangement of plastic bottles (standing) in attempts to knock as many down as possible.

Sustainability Stations

  • Clothing Swap
    Join Fort Greene Park Conservancy for our first ever clothing swap! Bring gently used, still wearable clothing for neighbors to take home and give new life. Or come by and scoop up your new favorite sweater. You don’t have to bring clothes in order to take any home.
    All clothes must be in wearable condition. Clothing from all ages, sizes, and genders welcome. Please wash before bringing to clothing swap. Do not bring underwear, swimsuits or other intimates to the swap unless they are in unopened packaging.
    We are only accepting clothing between 11:00am and 1:15pm

  • Clothes Mending Workshop
    Do you have a favorite shirt with a hole in it? Are you missing a button on your favorite sweater? Join teaching artist and designer, Joy Mao, as she leads a clothes mending workshop. Talk through sewing techniques with Joy Mao and receive recommendations on how to mend your well loved clothes. Watch and learn at the live sewing demonstration from 12:00 - 1:00 PM.
    Please bring your own sewing materials if possible! Limited space available.

  • Book Swap
    Trade your gently used books with your neighbors! The Fort Greene Park Conservancy is hosting a book swap.
    Drop off any books you no longer need between 11:00 AM to 1:30 PM on April 22. Come take as many books as you want between 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM. You don’t need to leave a book to take a book! Please no textbooks, magazines, or books in bad condition. Bring a tote and your love of reading!

  • Plant Swap
    Expand your houseplant collection! Drop by the plant swap to trade plants, plantlets, and cuttings to take home and grow.
    A small number of containers and rooting hormone will be provided, but, due to limited supply, you are encouraged to bring your own containers. Ensure that any plants or cuttings brought to the swap are free from pests and disease, and please be able to provide general guidelines such as:

    • Plant Name (Common or scientific)

    • Light preference

    • Soil preference

    • Toxic or non-toxic to people and/or pets
